Kid's Music Academy

Welcome to a Great New Year of Music!

We know that the Fredericksburg community has had for many years an exceptional musical tradition, and the Music Ministry of the Methodist Church is committed to continuing and even boosting that musical tradition into the future of our community. We don’t take that lightly, and are very eager to find new and fun ways to teach our children both musical skills, and the appreciation for using these talents to the glory of God.

This year we are planning to have 3 age groups:  Pre K,  then K, 1st & 2nd Grades, and 3rd, 4th & 5th Grades. With this division we will have more time to spend individually with smaller groups and our teaching techniques will work better being more specific to the ages of the children.  These groups will be learning to read music through singing, but also incorporating the Orff approach to children’s music education. Beginning with basic rhythm, movement and singing, the children are then taught the fundamentals of note reading and theory. Classes will include singing, clapping, and movements to rhythm sticks, xylophones, glockenspiels, drums, and a variety of rhythm instruments.

All of our faculty includes teachers who have teaching certification including the Academy leaders Don Doss and Judy Hickerson, who hold music education certification and have years of experience in classroom music education. Each group will have three sections of classes, the first led by Don Doss concentrating on singing, another with instruments led either by Judy Hickerson or Kathy Weaver, then a theory section which will be taught by Judy Hickerson or Kathy Doerr. Each section will last about 20 minutes then they will switch to the other section.

In case you don’t already know this - including your child into a music program is a huge investment into their future. Music involvement for your child is a proven help in accelerating children’s academic achievement in all areas.  Besides giving children a step up in finding their own musical abilities, musical activities will also help to nurture their individual creativity and self-expression. Music gives each child an advantage in their academic and social development, and the Kids Music Academy will give each of them a better understanding of their role in God’s kingdom work here in our community.

NEW INSTRUMENTAL ADDITIONS THIS YEAR!!

This year we are partnering with the Hill Country Youth Orchestra program under the direction of Patricia Lee who teaches string classes for those that wish to learn to play. Students will participate in a Wednesday class and a Saturday class every three weeks or so. While there is no cost involved in the KMA classes, the string component does involve a tuition and rental.  The tuition cost is $50 per month and instrument rental can be anywhere from $20 to $50 per month depending on the rental. You may request scholarship help to offset the tuition through a church scholarship program.

Other band instrument lessons and classes are offered to older students 5th grade and up on an individual schedule.  Flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet and trombone will be taught through one private lesson and one class lesson each week. Contact Don Doss if interested.
